Between Innocence and Instinct

BY JONATHAN JENA

Once a starless hope

You would never show

Why your skies were raging

And as you tried

To stay alive

You found a life worth saving

Staring back at you

From the deepest blue

With the sound of thunder

In the very life

That on this night

Had tried to pull you under

And still I see

In the memories

Things I thought I’d never

And though desperately

In what’s come to be

I think I can see forever

In all the lies

And the pain inside

Through all the pride and sorrow

In all I hide

Where my dreams reside

Stretches our tomorrow

And turn to me and say

That on that darkest night

The one who’d hoped to slay

Would have lived to save my life
