If you’re into hip hop and R&B or just so happen to enjoy artists like Beyoncé, Drake, and J Cole, chances are you’ve listened to a song written and composed by James Fauntleroy. Largely considered to be “the man behind the curtain”, Fauntleroy has written, co-written, and produced songs for artists that went on to be nominated and win Grammys such as “That’s what I Like” by Bruno Mars, “How much a Dollar Cost” by Kendrick Lamar, and “Pusher Love Girl” by Justin Timberlake. He co- wrote six tracks for Rihanna’s 2009 album Rated R and provided vocals for Kanye West's collaborative album, Cruel Summer. Other artists Fauntleroy has worked with include Chris Brown, Jay-Z, Nipsey Hussle, and many more.
With such an impressive musical background, you would think that the songwriter and producer would be more well known, yet his presence remains mysterious to the general public. Type in James Fauntleroy into the Youtube search engine and you’ll see the views for songs written by Fauntleroy himself range anywhere from 5k to 100k, whereas some songs he’s written/co written for other artists have garnered a billion views. These low views are obviously not a reflection of his own musical talents.
Most of Fauntleroy’s songs can be found on his SoundCloud where he has 71 tracks and 32,000 followers. Influenced by R&B and Soul, his smooth voice is one that captivates a listener’s ears. The use of acoustic guitars, pianos, and soft drums in his tracks make for an excellent relaxation and/or study playlist. His soundcloud also displays the many genres of music the songwriter has dabbled in such as his track called “Sound So Sure”, which has an alternative rock vibe to it. There is no telling what James Fauntleroy is working on next, but whether its dropping a new track on his Soundcloud or writing the next big hit for an artist, his vast skills and talent make him the magic behind the music.
